University Theatres Gallery Premieres New Musical, "Julian Po," March 6-9
The University Theatres Gallery series will present the premiere of "Julian Po," a new musical written by Iowa Playwrights Workshop student Andrew Barrett, with music by Chicago composer Ira Antelis, at 8 p.m. Thursday through Saturday, March 6-8, and at 3 p.m. Sunday, March 9, in Theatre B of the University of Iowa Theatre Building.
"Julian Po" combines bluegrass, rockabilly, gospel and contemporary pop in telling a modern myth -- both funny and solemnly reflective -- of a strange middle-aged man who stumbles into an even stranger town in the middle of America.
"Julian Po" is Barrett's second musical. His first, "In Sarajevo," last year became the first musical to be produced in the Iowa New Play Festival.
Composer Ira Antelis is a composer, arranger and producer who has worked with major artists including B.B. King, CeCe Winans. Etta James, Patti LaBelle, Shawn Colvin, Marc Anthony and Christina Aguilera.
Antelis has produced recordings including "Blues Brothers & Friends -- Live From Chicago's House of Blues," "Jim Croce: A Nashville Tribute" and "Sweet Emotion: Songs of Aerosmith."
"Julian Po" is directed by Andrew Golla, with musical direction by Maggie Grosvenor and design by Renee Bell. Live musical accompaniment will be provided by pianist Lee Nguyen and bluegrass artist J. Knight.
Admission will be $5 ($3 for UI students) at the door. Tickets will go on sale one hour before curtain time.
