UI Student From Clinton Named To Graduate Student Council

Christy Wolfe of Clinton has been named the Division F representative to the American Educational Research Association (AERA) Graduate Student Council.

Wolfe, a 1985 graduate of Mater Dei High School in Clinton, received a law degree from the University of Iowa in 1998 and is currently in the UI College of Education's social foundations of education graduate program.

"This is an incredible opportunity for me because I have met national scholars in education," Wolfe said. "I had a chance to sit with scholars whose works I taught. I've met people doing cutting edge work and am able to make connections with people."

Wolfe expects to receive her Ph.D. in May 2004 and is currently working on a dissertation proposal dealing with open enrollment in Iowa public school districts. She is also researching the history of rural teachers in Iowa.

AERA is a professional membership organization that strives to improve the educational process by encouraging scholarly inquiry related to education. Its members include educators; administrators; directors of research, testing, or evaluation in federal, state and local agencies; behavioral scientists; counselors; evaluators; and graduate students.

The Graduate Student Council is made up of 12 divisions with two members selected to represent each division. Within each division the council makes sure student voices are heard. Through the AERA's annual conferences, Division F - which represents history and historiography -- connects historical analysis more closely to the work of colleagues in other areas of educational research.

AERA's annual meeting features 3,000 presenters in more than 1,500 sessions. Wolfe is currently helping plan Division F activities for the AERA's next annual meeting, which is set to take place in Chicago April 21-25.
