Skorton To Be Installed As UI President March 1
David Skorton will be installed as the University of Iowa's 19th president during a ceremony at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 1 in Hancher Auditorium.
The event is free and open to the public. No reservations are required.
The Iowa Brass Quintet and Kantorei, the premiere vocal ensemble of the UI School of Music, will provide a musical prelude, followed with remarks by several speakers, including Iowa Gov. Tom Vilsack; interim UI President Willard "Sandy" Boyd; Owen Newlin, president of the Board of Regents, State of Iowa; and Kirkwood Community College President Norm Nielsen. Christopher Merrill, professor and director of the UI International Writing Program, and Iowa Writers' Workshop Director Frank Conroy, the F. Wendell Miller Professor of Creative Writing, will give readings.
A reception will be held in the Hancher lobby immediately following the program, with music provided by the UI Faculty Jazz Ensemble.
Skorton, currently the UI's vice president for research and external relations, succeeds Mary Sue Coleman, who left the UI in August to become president of the University of Michigan.
