Hancher, Iowa City Schools Partner With Kennedy Center
The University of Iowa Hancher Auditorium and the Iowa City Community School District have been selected by the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C., to participate in the Partners in Education Institute, May 14-17. Across the country, 12 teams of arts organizations and school systems were selected to participate in the institute, which will focus on the development of arts education programs for teachers.
Hancher and the Iowa City schools were selected by effectively demonstrating the potential to initiate or expand programs for teachers, and their stated commitment to collaborate on developing programs. They will be added to a roster of more than 80 teams who have already participated in the institute.
At the institute, participants will examine the variety of educational offerings for teachers developed and refined by the Kennedy Center for Washington-area teachers over the last 25 years. The teams will see events in action, examine how they are planned, implemented and evaluated, and explore program designs.
Nearly 2,000 teachers from 16 public schools in the Washington metropolitan area attend 30-40 Kennedy Center events each season. The events are designed for teachers working at the pre-school through high-school levels.
The Partners in Education Institute is funded by the U.S. Department of Education; the Kennedy Center Corporate Fund; the National Committee for the Performing Arts; Kraft Foods, an operating company of Philip Morris Companies, Inc.; and the Roger S. Firestone Foundation.
