KSUI Producer Sherman Has Three New Publications

Barney Sherman, producer and host at the University of Iowa's classical station KSUI FM 91.7 and its NPR news station WSUI AM 910, has three new book publications.

Sherman co-edited the new Cambridge University Press book "Performing Brahms," and wrote two of its chapters. His article "Conducting 18th Century Music," appears this month in another book from the same publisher, "The Cambridge Companion to Conducting." Also, Oxford University Press has just reissued his first book, "Inside Early Music," in paperback.

Critical response so far has been unanimous. The Times Literary Supplement called "Inside Early Music" "excellent" and "a great achievement," and numerous other reviews praised it. The first review of Performing Brahms, in BBC Music Magazine, called it "impressive" and "readable," and praised the book for showing how musicology can connect to the real world of music.

Regarding "Performing Brahms," the conductor Sir Charles Mackerras said, "Every aspect of Brahms's oeuvre and its interpretation is thoroughly discussed and analysed ... One gets a real impression of the conditions of music making in Brahms's time and of the way this fits into his artistic milieu."

Sherman has written about music for the New York Times, the International Herald Tribune, the Los Angeles Times and many other popular and scholarly publications. (Many of his publications are posted at his Web site, His most recent is a review about Mahler for the classical-music online magazine Andante.

Regarding his afternoon program on KSUI, says Sherman, "I try to find the right blend to make music meaningful both for newcomers and for connoisseurs." His approach seems to be working: Arbitron ratings show that afternoon listenership has more than doubled since he took over the shift. Sherman also hosts a monthly call-in show on WSUI that focuses on economics, public policy and finance.
