UI Division Of Performing Arts Will Hold Public Auditions Starting Aug. 25
Auditions have been scheduled for several performing organizations in the University of Iowa Division of Performing Arts, including music, theater and dance groups. Some of the groups are open to participation by members of the public as well as UI students.
Public auditions will be held for University Theatres fall productions from 7 to 11 p.m. Thursday and Friday, Aug. 28-29, and 1-5 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 30. in Theatre B of the UI Theatre Building. Callbacks will be Sunday-Monday, Aug. 31-Sept. 1. Parts will be available in two Mainstage productions as well as gallery productions, workshops and readings. Descriptions of the plays on the fall schedule will be posted at the auditions.
The Mainstage season includes the musical "A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum" by Stephen Sondheim, for which both singing roles and non-singing roles will be available.
Persons interested in the auditions should sign up for specific times on a sign-up sheet posted on the main callboard in the north hallway of the Theatre Building. Walk-ins may sign up for the waiting list at the auditions.
Auditioners for acting roles should prepare one or two monologues. To audition for singing roles in the musical, prepare one or two monologues and 16 bars of a song; a capella is acceptable. A CD/cassette boombox will be available for those with recorded music. An accompanist will be provided for those bringing their own piano sheet music.
Total audition time for all general auditions must not exceed four minutes. All auditioners should bring a recent head shot or other photo, or $1.25 to have a photo taken at the audition.
No affiliation with the Department of Theatre Arts or the UI is required to participate in University Theatres productions, and theatre arts majors are not given special consideration in auditioning or casting. The department is committed to "non-traditional" casting except in cases where a character's race, gender, handicap or age is stipulated in the script. Auditions for the UI Dance Company's annual Dance Gala in Hancher Auditorium are open to all registered UI students. Auditions will be held at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 26, in Room E201 of Halsey Hall, with registration beginning at 5 p.m. For additional information about Dance Gala auditions, call the dance department at 335-2228 in advance.
The UI Dance Department will hold auditions for Dancers in Company, the department's touring repertory company, at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 9 in the Loft of Halsey Hall, Room E109. Registration will again begin at 5 p.m. Dancers in Company is open to all UI dance majors.
Auditions have been scheduled for several performing ensembles in the University of Iowa School of Music for the 2002-2003 academic year, including ensembles that are open to participation by members of the public as well as UI students.
Auditions for choral groups will be held the first week of classes, beginning Aug. 25. Each choral group presents one or more concerts of its own, in addition to singing choral concerts with the University Symphony. This year the combined ensembles will be performing the Bach Mass in B Minor in December and the Mozart Requiem in March.
Four major choral groups will be filled by auditions:
Singers are asked to prepare an aria, art song or any other song they know well, although a prepared song is not required. All auditioners will be tested on their voice range, timbre, music reading ability and listening skills. An accompanist will be provided. Orchestra auditions will be held the first week of classes, beginning Aug. 26. There is a sign up sheet outside Room 1036 VMB where students can sign up for a five-minute audition time. Wind players must contact the respective instrument professor to set up an audition. Please contact orchestra manager Enaldo Oliveira at 335-1631 for more information.
Jazz auditions will be held the first week of classes, beginning Aug. 26. There is a sign up sheet outside Room 1055 VMB where students can sign up for a five-minute audition time. Please contact the jazz studio at 335-1633 for more information.
Auditions for Voice performance for Non-Majors will be held beginning August 24, and continuing the evenings of 25 and 26. Students should be prepared to sing a familiar song, such as "Happy Birthday," "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star" or "My Country 'tis of Thee"; to sight read; and to echo patterns played on the piano. There is a sign up sheet outside Room 2083 VMB where students can sign up for a five-minute audition time. Please contact Susan Jones at 335-1654 for more information.
Band auditions will be held the first week of classes, beginning Aug. 25. There is a sign up sheet outside Room 1064 VMB where students can sign up for a five-minute audition. Please contact the Band office at 335-1635 for more information.
The Steel Pan Band will hold auditions on Tuesday, Aug. 26, at 6:30 p.m. in Voxman Music Building Room 1061. Please contact Daniel Moore at 335-1632 for more information.
