MEDIA ADVISORY: Medicine, Pharmacy White Coat Ceremonies Aug. 22 and 23
WHAT: White Coat Ceremonies for incoming UI medical and pharmacy students
WHEN/WHERE: Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine: 3 p.m. Friday, Aug. 22, at Hancher Auditorium
UI College of Pharmacy: 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 23, in the Main Lounge of the Iowa Memorial Union.
The White Coat Ceremonies at the UI Carver College of Medicine and the UI College of Pharmacy are events that welcome new students to the colleges.
At the UI College of Medicine White Coat Ceremony, Susan R. Johnson, M.D., associate dean of faculty affairs in the college and professor of obstetrics and gynecology, will deliver an address to the students titled, "Aesculapian Authority, 24/7, and You." Following Johnson's speech, the medical students will be ceremonially cloaked with their first white laboratory coats. Then, in the presence of family, friends and faculty, they will recite the Oath of Hippocrates. A reception will follow in the Hancher lobby.
At the UI College of Pharmacy White Coat Ceremony, Rex McKee of Homecare Pharmacy in Waterloo will address the students. Jon Beyer, director of clinical support services at Covenant Medical Center in Waterloo and president of the UI College of Pharmacy Alumni Board, will present a "Welcome to the Profession." After receiving their white laboratory coats and name badges, the students will recite the Oath of a Pharmacist. Following a short reception at the IMU, current students will host a picnic at City Park, providing an opportunity for faculty, staff and students to meet the new students and their parents.
