Brains, Calligraphy, Podolaks Featured At Final State Fair Weekend

Visitors to the University of Iowa's State Fair booth this weekend can get a glimpse of animals' brains, calligraphic artwork and former Hawkeye stars.

On Saturday, the Carver College of Medicine's department of neuroscience will offer a "Whose brain is it?" quiz with visitors trying to match the real brains of animals with their owners. Ed Podolak, a former Hawkeye football star who went on to win a Super Bowl ring with the Chiefs in 1970, and his daughter, former Iowa basketball player Laura Podolak, will make an appearance in the Athletic Hall of Fame area, as will Herky and the UI Cheerleaders/Dance Team. And calligraphic artist Glen Epstein will write the names of fair-goers and transform them into abstract pieces of art.

The daily drawing Saturday will be for two football tickets to the Iowa vs. Illinois game, a $50 Iowa Hawk Shop gift certificate, the Touchdown Iowa Highlight Video or an Orange Bowl Media Guide and Women's Basketball mini-basketball.

Sunday's highlights include an exhibit on oral cancer and daily drawing for two football tickets to the Iowa vs. Minnesota game, a Touchdown Iowa Highlight Video, a men's basketball 2002 media guide, an Iowa Football Spring Guide or a Brad Banks Heisman DVD.

Sunday there will also be drawings for several grand prizes, including a package of tickets to Iowa games against Penn State, Illinois and Minnesota; three autographed balls signed by Iowa women's basketball coach Lisa Bluder, Iowa football coach Kirk Ferentz and Iowa basketball coach Steve Alford; and one drawing for two tickets to the Hancher Auditorium performance of Drummers of West Africa on Sunday, Oct. 19, as well as a one-night stay in a suite at the Iowa House hotel.
