Dance Gala Guest Choreographer Crandall Is In Residence At UI

The University of Iowa dance department is wasting no time before beginning preparations for its major annual production, the Dance Gala, which will be performed in Hancher Auditorium Nov. 7-8. Guest choreographer Lucas Crandall, artistic associate of Hubbard Street Dance Chicago, will begin a two-week residency the first day of fall classes, Aug. 25.

In addition to creating a new work for the Dance Gala in four-hour-a-day sessions, Crandall will teach daily modern ballet classes in the dance department.

A native of Wisconsin, Crandall began his performing career at the Ballet du Grand Theatre in Geneva, Switzerland, and later joined Nederlands Dans Theate.

Since Crandall's arrival at Hubbard Street Dance Chicago in 2000, he has assisted choreographers, taught ballet at the Lou Conte Dance Studio and conducted master classes throughout the country.

Crandall began his choreographic career in 1982, and his pieces have been performed in Switzerland, Italy, France, Canada and the United States. In 1999, he was selected from 60 candidates to be one of six participants in the third International Choreographic Workshop in Zurich, Switzerland.
