Community Private Well Study Meetings Set For Aug. 11, 14
Hills residents involved in the Iowa Community Private Well Study and the general public are invited to attend informational meetings, either Monday, Aug. 11 in Muscatine or Thursday, Aug. 14 in Peosta, to learn more about the study.
Well owners in more than 50 incorporated Iowa communities not served by a public water supply system participated in a research project investigating the quality of drinking water in private wells. The study is a cooperative effort between the University of Iowa Hygienic Laboratory, the U.S. Geological Survey, the Iowa Department of Natural Resources, county environmental health specialists, and the UI's Center for Health Effects of Environmental Contamination (CHEEC) and Environmental Health Sciences Research Center (EHSRC).
"Our concern for Iowa citizens prompted this study," said Michael Wichman, senior program manager, from the UI Hygienic Laboratory. "Little information is available on water quality for towns using private wells."
County environmental health specialists collected water samples and surveyed well owners in the summer and fall of 2002. Participation in the study was voluntary.
At the informational meetings, representative members of the study team will provide an overview of study findings and answer questions from the public.
"We want to emphasize that these meetings are to provide information and education only, and this does not require well owners to take action," said Peter Weyer, associate director of the Center for Health Effects of Environmental Contamination at the UI.
Interested citizens are invited to attend either of the sessions:
7 p.m. Monday, Aug. 11
7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 14
