Nurses At UI Hospitals And Clinics Are Finalists For Excellence Awards

Three nurses at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics are finalists for prestigious awards for nursing excellence.

NurseWeek, a multimedia company with print publications that reach more than two million nurses annually, bestows its Nursing Excellence Awards annually.

The nominees from UI Hospitals and Clinics include Linda Abbott in the Patient Advocacy category, Mark Miksch in the Teaching category and Sonia (Toni) Mueller in the Mentoring category.

"It is a great honor to receive a nomination for this award," said Linda Q. Everett, Ph.D., associate director and chief nursing officer at UI Hospitals and Clinics. "We are very proud of these highly accomplished nurses, who certainly reflect the outstanding quality of the nursing professionals on our entire staff."

NurseWeek writers will interview the finalists for profiles that will be published in the August/September issue of the magazine. The magazine staff will also profile the award recipients in the October/November issue.

Candidates received nominations in eight categories across the 12-state region served by NurseWeek's Great Lakes and Midwest editions. A panel of nursing leaders selected six finalists in each category.

A UI Hospitals and Clinics nurse received a Nursing Excellence Award from NurseWeek in 2002. Dorothy "Dottie" Armens received a first-place award in the Patient Advocacy category for her efforts to go beyond the call of duty to advocate for patients. In addition, Jackie Heinle, nurse manager in the Burn Treatment Center, was a finalist in the Community Service category for her significant professional, voluntary contributions in community based settings and community outreach efforts.
