UI Latino And Native American Alumni Alliance Elects Officers
The University of Iowa Latino and Native American Alumni Alliance (UI-LANA3) recently elected a board of directors and officers at its second annual meeting and reunion July 25-27 in Chicago.
The officers are: Adele Lozano of Iowa City, Iowa, president; Arturo Ramirez of Houston, Texas, vice president; Rosa Heredia of Chicago, Ill., secretary; and Ben Pintor of Rio Rancho, N.M., treasurer. Nancy "Rusty" Barcelo of Seattle, Wash. will serve as an ex-officio board member. In addition to electing officers, some two dozen participants and their families took part in cultural and social events.
Founded in 2001 and sponsored by the university's Opportunity at Iowa program, LANA3 promotes and supports UI diversity goals by building on the legacy of UI Latino and Native American activism, community, education and cultural heritage. The organization's goals include promoting the recruitment/retention of Latino and Native American students at the University of Iowa, fundraising for scholarships, creating mentoring programs, professional networking and providing opportunities for social interaction.
"We have a large number of Latino and Native American alumni all over the country who still feel a strong connection to each other and to the University of Iowa based on their shared experiences when they were students," says Adele Lozano, LANA3 president and Opportunity at Iowa program associate. "These are professional men and women, including teachers, lawyers, doctors, nurses, and social workers, who want to be involved in promoting the future success of our communities here at Iowa."
In preparation for its third annual meeting, scheduled for fall 2004 at the UI, LANA3 will sell t-shirts as a fundraiser. For more information, contact Adele Lozano, Opportunity at Iowa, at 319-335-0591 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
