UI Field House Pool Closed Due To Falling Acoustical Tiles

University of Iowa administrators have closed the Field House swimming pool because of a safety concern. Acoustical tiles from the ceiling in the building began to fall into the pool this week, and as more tiles began to come loose, officials closed the pool.

Harry Ostrander, UI director of recreational services, says the tiles are falling apparently due to failing adhesive. The pool will be closed until repairs can be made, and there is not yet a timetable for accomplishing the repairs and opening the pool again. A walkway that crosses the pool through the Field House will be covered and will remain open to accommodate foot traffic through the building.

Each day about 100 recreational swimmers and 50 members of the men's and women's intercollegiate teams use the pool, Ostrander says, along with master swimmers, students in academic classes, and club members in water polo, synchronized swimming, scuba, and kayaking.

"We regret the inconvenience, but the safety concerns are paramount," Ostrander says.
