UI's Andreasen Receives International Health Award

A University of Iowa Health Care physician-researcher has received the Interbrew-Baillet Latour Health Prize for 2003. Nancy C. Andreasen, M.D., Ph.D., the Andrew H. Woods Chair of Psychiatry, received the award for her contributions to the early diagnosis and treatment of psychosis.

The Interbrew-Baillet Latour Health Prize is the most important scientific prize awarded in Belgium and rewards applied medical research on a theme chosen in accordance with the Academies of Medicine of Belgium and the help of the National Fund for Scientific Research.

Andreasen, who also directs the UI Schizophrenia Research Clinic, has conducted landmark research in the early identification of schizophrenia. Her findings have greatly contributed to the understanding of schizophrenia, specifically the role of the prefrontal cortex in negative symptoms of the disease, including deterioration of thought, decreased attention and loss of feeling. These discoveries may contribute to the development of new therapies.

Andreasen will receive the award from a member of the Belgium royal family at a ceremony to be held in June in Brussels. The award carries a prize of 150,000 euros.

The fund is named after Count Alfred de Baillet Latour, who was born in Brussels in 1901. Latour established the fund as a way of serving his country and humanity. He joined Artois Breweries in 1936 and served as director from 1947 until his death in 1980. For more information on the Interbrew-Baillet Latour fund, visit

In addition to the recent Latour prize and numerous other awards, Andreasen received the (U.S.) President's National Medal of Science in 2000.
