Weiss To Talk About International Law, War, Nuclear Policy April 23
Peter Weiss, president of the International Association of Lawyers against Nuclear Arms, will speak on "International Law, the War, and Nuclear Policy, Wednesday, April 23 at 7:30 p.m. This lecture will be at 100 Philips Hall and is free and open to the public. This event is sponsored by the Organization for Active Support of International Students (OASIS) and the National Lawyers Guild.
A graduate of Yale Law School, Weiss is also the president of the Lawyer's committee on Nuclear Policy. He has lectured and written widely on the international law of war and peace, nuclear weapons, and human rights. Weiss is also the leading human rights lawyer with the Center for Constitutional Rights, and litigated the seminal case establishing the right of victims of torture to sue their torturers in U.S. courts.
Weiss has long been an activist for peace in the Middle East and is currently a member of the Arab-Jewish Peace Group and the Executive Committee of Americans for Peace Now.
OASIS is a newly formed student group that works to provide a united platform to enhance international student voices. A part of the University of Iowa Student Government, OASIS bridges various student groups and creates a cohesive and united UI international student body. The organization also provides resources and proactive support to all international students as well as creates awareness of the enriching presence of the diverse international community to the UI and local community.
