Women's Center Plans 'Take Back the Night' Observance
The Women's Resource and Action Center, in collaboration with campus and community organizations including the Domestic Violence Intervention Project, Emma Goldman Clinic, Rape Victim Advocacy Center, Iowa Women's Foundation and the UI Feminist Majoring Leadership Alliance, has organized events for this year's observance of "Take Back the Night." All events are open to the public and free of charge.
On Wednesday, April 23, from noon to 1 p.m., the public is invited to participate in a poster-making event at the Pentacrest on the University of Iowa campus. Poster board and markers will be provided, along with samples of posters from previous years. Signs and posters made at this event will be used the following evening for the march.
On Thursday, April 24, a new component of the annual observance will be in College Green Park in Iowa City from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. "Men Taking a Stand: Working Together to End Violence" is an empowering rally and barbeque designed to offer an opportunity for participants to take a stand against violence and foster community. Basketball games will also be available.
On Thursday, April 24, the "Take Back the Night" march and rally will begin at 6:30 p.m. in College Green Park in Iowa City. The rally will include live music and brief speeches by community members. The event is designed to empower survivors of violence and to help raise awareness about violence against women. Following the rally, participants may join an anti-violence march through downtown Iowa City. A speak-out will be held at College Green Park following the parade.
