UI Human Resources Wins Two Workplace Awards

The University of Iowa has won two awards this spring for excellence in human resources and creating a psychologically healthy workplace.

The awards are the Midwest Region Institutional Award for Excellence from the College and University Personnel Association for Human Resources (CUPA) and the Iowa Psychologically Health Workplace Award from the Iowa Psychological Foundation.

The CUPA human resources award is presented to an institution of higher education "that has distinguished itself through creative application of human resource principles or that is widely renowned for the outstanding manner in which it develops and maintains it human resource program."

Judie Hermsen, assistant director of UI Human Resources, says the unit received this award for its recent efforts to enhance the organization of the HR unit representatives and ensure that all sections of the campus are represented.

"We created a new council for senior HR campus leadership, an HR contact group, and mapped each staff member on campus to their HR unit rep, using the self-service web site," Hermsen says. "We're excited in central HR to win this award, but this was a campus-wide effort, so it really belongs to all the HR unit reps."

The award will be accepted at the CUPA Midwest Regional Conference and Expo, April 27-30 in Cleveland.

The Iowa Psychologically Health Workplace Award from the Iowa Psychological Foundation was awarded to the UI WorkLife program for "a demonstrated commitment to the well-being of employees, families, and communities."

"The award recognizes WorkLife's family support options related to child care and elderly assistance, its wellness activities, and efforts to develop supportive supervisors responsive to work and family needs, diversity, and performance management and appraisal," Hermsen says.

The award was accepted April 11 at the Iowa Psychological Association's spring conference.
