Release: April 11, 2002

Nursing Student Wynos Is Student Employee Of The Year

Nicole Wynos, a student in the UI College of Nursing, has been named the Student Employee of the Year for her work as a nursing assistant with HomeSafe, an elder case management service in the College of Nursing.

The National Student Employment Administrators Association sponsors the yearly recognition for student workers for their reliability, quality of work, initiative, professionalism and uniqueness of contribution are evaluated. Working for HomeSafe, Wynos provides patient care and support to older persons so that they can live independently and longer in their own homes.

"She developed a method for tracking client outcomes over time that was so successful it is being used as part of the record for all clients," said Janet Specht, an associate professor of nursing who nominated her for the award. "Nicole sees this not as a job but as a learning opportunity to develop the skills for a profession in geriatric nursing."

Wynos is a student in the College of Nursing's gerontology department, which recently was ranked No. 2 in the country by U.S. News & World Report. UI President David Skorton presented her with a certificate acknowledging her Employee of the Year award.

During her two years with HomeSafe, Specht said Wynos has taken the time to develop strong interpersonal relationships with the clients and possesses the two key qualities of a geriatric nurse, kindness and intelligence.

"Clients will often call to specifically request Nicole and she will arrange her schedule to accommodate their needs," said Specht. "Nicole takes the time to discover what is necessary to help the patient thrive. For instance, one of her patients loved being around children, so Nicole would often bring her own children along on social visits to the client."

Other student worker awards include:

Certificate of Distinction, Geoffrey Buchanan, assistant tour guide coordinator and campus tour guide for the Office of Admission.

Certificate of Appreciation, Jayne Dermand, membership assistant and acting Assistant Director of Alumni Programs, Alumni Services.
