UI Museum Of Art Hosts Annual "WOW! Family Day" April 27
The 13th annual "WOW! Family Day," a fun filled afternoon of art, music and hands-on activities for the entire family, will be from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, April 27 at the University of Iowa Museum of Art. The event is free and open to the public.
Family Day is the culmination of UI Museum of Art's Widen Our World (WOW!) program that invites third-grade students from Iowa City and surrounding areas to explore works of art at the museum with their class.
Event activities are scheduled throughout the afternoon, and refreshments will be provided. A hands-on craft activity and a museum scavenger hunt will be available from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Entertainment will include Tom Nothnagle performing on the guitar and providing guests with the opportunity to sing along from 1 p.m. to 1:45 p.m. and from 2:30 p.m. to 3:15 p.m., and storytelling by Steve Thunder-McGuire from the UI School of Art and Art History from 2 to 2:30 p.m. and 3:30 to 4 p.m.
The WOW! program is intended to introduce students to art and art museums as a life-long resource for learning and enjoyment. By exposing children to art from many different cultures, the UI Museum of Art hopes to deepen the children's appreciation of their own multi-cultural heritage.
In preparation for the museum visit, teachers and students view and discuss slides of 15 selected works from the museum's permanent collection. Once at the museum the children are able to view the works of art and take part in discussion.
WOW! is a collaboration between the UI Museum of Art and the Iowa City Community School District, with sponsorship by US Bank.
