UI Dance Department Presents Thesis Concert April 10-12
The University of Iowa Dance Department will present a Thesis Concert by graduate students Tony Orrico and Tracy Vacura at 8 p.m. Thursday through Saturday, April 10-12, in the Space/Place Theatre of UI North Hall.
Orrico says, "My work is a 40-minute length piece titled 'metafours,' purposely spelled 'fours' to indicate four separate sections to the work that meditate on different themes, metaphorically. The four words I used as the basis for movement inspirations were powerless, diminishing, marginal and transcendent.
"In dealing with the broad relationship of force and compliance, I create an atmosphere in which dancers interact with visual artwork and at times become both living bodies in space and the medium for visual art."
Vacura's choreographic thesis, "The Spectacular Extravaganza of Living Dolls and Girlie Girls," uses jazz and pop music to define the ideal woman. Dara Bengelsdorf, Courtney Clonch and Courtney Ellis will provide vocal adaptations of songs by a wide range of artists, including Frank Sinatra, Tori Amos and the Offspring.
Vacura explains, "Costumes and text attempt to humorously expose the myths surrounding female beauty and sexuality, but the movement vocabulary of jazz dance simultaneously allows for the pleasure of watching beautiful, sexual women."
Tickets for the April 10-12 Thesis Concert by Tony Orrico and Tracy Vacura are $10 ($5 for UI students).
