UI Announces Business Competition For High School Students

Young entrepreneurs from across Iowa can win up to $500 in seed capital as part of a business plan competition sponsored by the John Pappajohn Entrepreneurial Center (JPEC) at the University of Iowa.

JPEC is currently accepting applications for the 2003 Young Iowa Entrepreneurs Awards, a competition designed to encourage entrepreneurial ventures among Iowa high school students. Selected applicants will participate in a free entrepreneurship seminar at the University of Iowa, June 24-27. Nine seed capital grants of $200 to $500 will be awarded at the seminar.

During the program, aspiring young entrepreneurs will develop their entrepreneurial and business knowledge, and network with prominent entrepreneurs and business leaders. Iowa high school students who have completed grades nine to 11 are eligible to apply. Up to 32 young entrepreneurs will be selected to attend the summer program.

All entries must be received by JPEC by May 2; selection will be announced May 9. An easy-to-complete application for the program is available at

JPEC is a recognized leader in offering innovative education and outreach programs for entrepreneurs of all ages. JPEC was one of the first programs in the country to integrate entrepreneurship education with business, engineering, health sciences, and liberal arts and sciences at the undergraduate and graduate levels. The Center has partnered with the state's community colleges to provide entrepreneurial training to aspiring business owners across Iowa. It also offers entrepreneurial educational programs for Iowa elementary, middle and high school teachers and students. Entrepreneur magazine has ranked JPEC among the top 50 nationally recognized academic programs.
