Homecoming 2002 activities announced

The University of Iowa's 2002 Homecoming schedule has been released, with a week's worth of activities beginning Oct. 1 that include on-campus and community events, an annual parade grand marshaled by UI women's basketball coach Lisa Bluder, and the annual football game against Purdue.

This year's theme, "Keeping the Past, Creating the Future," will be integrated into the week's six main events, which include King and Queen Coronation, Havoc at Hubbard, Sports Night, the Oct. 4 Homecoming parade and pep rally.

Homecoming buttons can be purchased for $2 at many UI-community businesses and at the University Box Office at the Iowa Memorial Union. Proceeds from the button sales provide the majority of the funds that pay for Homecoming events.

Below is a schedule of events:

Oct. 1, noon to 5 p.m., Havoc at Hubbard. Havoc at Hubbard is a spirited event where the public can get involved early in Homecoming Week. Featured events include a 2-on-2 jousting tournament, a 6-on-6 volleyball tournament and a dodgeball competition.

Oct. 2, 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., Sports Night. Meet UI athletes at Coral Ridge Mall in Coralville. UI mascot Herky and UI cheerleaders will also be on hand.

Oct. 3, 7 p.m., IOWA SHOUT! Main Lounge, Iowa Memorial Union. Enjoy live entertainment by UI student groups who have created short skits and dance routines for this annual variety show. These acts are part of the sweepstakes competition, with the doors opening at 6:30 p.m. Admission is $5.

Oct. 4, 6:15 p.m., Homecoming Parade. The parade begins at the corner of Gilbert and Iowa Streets and ends at the corner of Washington and Gilbert streets.

Oct. 4, Pep Rally (follows parade). The Pep Rally will be held in a location to be determined. The Iowa Dance Team, UI cheerleaders, the Iowa Marching Band and mascot Herky will attend. Special guest John Pappajohn will speak and the 2002 Homecoming king and queen will be crowned.

Oct. 5, football game, 11:10 a.m. The Hawkeyes take on the Purdue Boilermakers.
