Hancher Guild Wins Iowa 'Governor's Volunteer Award'

Hancher Guild, the volunteer organization that serves the University of Iowa Hancher Auditorium, is a winner of the 2002 Iowa "Governor's Volunteer Award." Gov. Tom Vilsack presented the award to Hancher Guild co-presidents Roy and Rita Justis in a Sept. 13 ceremony at Linn-Mar High School in Marion.

This is the 20th anniversary of the "Governor's Volunteer Awards" program, which was developed to recognize the commitment, service and time that hundreds of volunteers contribute to Iowa's state agencies and partnering organizations. Each individual volunteer or volunteer organization can win the award only once.

Hancher's artistic director, Judith Hurtig, commented, "The Hancher Guild has been an indispensable partner for the auditorium through the years. This group of 220 people have hosted artists, helped with audience development, played an important role in our school matinees and the annual Children's Art Exhibit and in recent years, they have run the Hancher Showcase, which has contributed $105,000 to support Hancher's education program. There are times when we simply could not do what we do without the Guild. They are friends, advisors and very loyal supporters and they richly deserve this award."

The Showcase gift shop alone accounts for an average of 3,500 hours of volunteer service to Hancher each academic year.

Hancher's executive director, Chuck Swanson, directly oversees the activities of the guild. "Hancher Guild is truly deserving of this award, and we are very pleased that they are receiving this recognition for all the hard work they have done for Hancher," Swanson said. "They are an important part of the Hancher tradition, and they will continue to be in the years to come."
