Journalism Building Ground Breaking Is Sept. 19

WHO: UI Interim President Willard L. "Sandy" Boyd; Linda Maxson, dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences; Owen J. Newlin, president, Board of Regents, State of Iowa; Lloyd G. and Betty Adler Schermer; UI faculty, staff, and students; and members of the community

WHAT: Ground breaking for the Philip D. Adler Journalism and Mass Communication Building

WHEN: 4:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 19

WHERE: West of the Becker Communication Studies Building, Iowa Avenue

Members of the media as well as the UI and local community are invited to join in a groundbreaking ceremony for a new building to house the UI School of Journalism and Mass Communication and other programs. The approximately 65,000-square-foot, three-story building, designed by OPN Architects Inc. of Cedar Rapids, will include space for the Department of Cinema and Comparative Literature and other College of Liberal Arts and Sciences classes, as well as for The Daily Iowan newspaper. Construction on the new facility will begin immediately after the groundbreaking, with completion slated for early 2005.
