Tony Bennett Helps Hancher Celebrate 30th Anniversary At UI

A concert by legendary vocalist Tony Bennett, champagne toasts in the lobby and a dance on the stage will all be part of the celebration when the University of Iowa Hancher Auditorium hosts its 30th Anniversary Gala at 8 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 28.

The lobby reception is being planned by Hancher Guild, the auditorium’s volunteer organization, through a committee chaired by Barb Nicknish.

Because pearls are the precious stone of 30th anniversaries, the audience is encouraged to wear pearls to the event. Necklaces of artificial pearls will also be distributed.

All ticket buyers are automatically entered in a drawing for a real pearl necklace, donated by Hands Jewelers. The week of the concert the necklace will be on display at the Hands store at 109 E. Washington St. in downtown Iowa City.

The post-performance dance will feature one of the Midwest’s top big bands, Bobby Layne and his Orchestra, from Lincoln, Neb. Layne was the 1998 National Bandleader of the Year, presented by the National Ballroom Entertainment Association.

The Gazette/KCRG are the corporate sponsors of the Tony Bennett concert, through the University of Iowa Foundation. The post-performance party and dance are supported by Oaknoll Retirement Residence and US Bank.

The few remaining tickets for the Hancher 30th Anniversary Gala are $75 and $50 ($30 and $25 for UI students and youth), from the Hancher box office.
