University employees to compete for fitness and Health Charities of Iowa

The University of Iowa has announced a UI Wellness program designed to pit faculty and staff against one another. "Not to worry, " says Laura Reed, UI WorkLife director, "It's the healthiest of competitions."

"Charity Challenge" sets two teams of faculty and staff in competition by way of fitness regimens and contributions to the Community Health Charities of Iowa campaign. The teams will be led by David Skorton, UI vice president for research and external affairs, and John Fieselmann, a physician at University of Iowa Health Care. Interested staff and faculty members will choose a team and make a minimum $10 donation to Community Health Charities of Iowa. Then, between Oct. 1 and Oct. 28, they'll follow a personal fitness regimen.

The winning team will be the group with the highest average number of minutes exercised per team member during the month. All donations made or collected by participants will be directed to Community Health Charities of Iowa.

Staff and faculty can register for "Charity Challenge" by writing to or by calling 353-2314 before Oct. 1. The fitness regimen can include any of the activities currently accepted in the fitness category of the U&I Well On Our Way program. For a list of acceptable activities, see the list at .
