University of Iowa Health Care Web site wins international honor

Three University of Iowa Health Care staff members shared a Gold Quill Award of Excellence in competition sponsored by the International Association of Business Communicators (IABC).

Greg Johnson and Nola Riley from the UI Virtual Hospital, and Pat Badtke from the UI Joint Office for Planning, Marketing and Communications, shared the honor for successfully re-launching the Web site. During its first year, the site demonstrated phenomenal growth: a 295 percent increase in number of hits, a 200 percent increase in the number of pages read and a 165 percent increase in the number of visitors. The number of online patient clinic appointments tripled.

In addition, the UI Health Care Web Advisory Committee received university-wide recognition in the spring 2001 with an IOWA -- Improving Our Workplace Award. The site also was featured on the front page of the September 2001 issue of Internet Healthcare Strategies, a national magazine.

The Gold Quill Awards program -- considered by many to be the hallmark of excellence in business communication -- offers professional communicators an opportunity to have their work evaluated by expert judges, many of whom also have been recognized for excellence in communication. Winners receive international recognition in IABC's magazine, Communication World, and at IABC's international conference.

The site is the official Web site for University of Iowa Health Care, the partnership between University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics and the UI Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine.
