UI public radio stations KSUI/WSUI raise $213,000 in fund drive

The University of Iowa's public radio stations, WSUI-AM and KSUI-FM, raised $213,000 during their fall on-air fund drive Oct.19-25.

WSUI/KSUI listeners made 1,774 contributions and pledges during the drive, exceeding the $210,000 goal, said John Monick, director of Broadcasting Services at the UI.

"It's very comforting that people care about public radio and are willing to support us during tough economic times," he said. Monick also thanked a fund-raising team of WSUI/KSUI staff and volunteers for the their efforts.

Several area businesses and individuals also made challenge pledges, encouraging listeners to match their donation during a specified time during the drive. Special broadcasts of "Car Talk," "Fresh Air," "A Prairie Home Companion," "St. Paul Sunday" and other popular public radio programs were aired throughout the week in support of the drive.

The fund drive, which was held to raise money for the UI's public radio stations that continue to feel the impact of state budget cuts and rising costs of operation.

Contributions from listeners provide support for national programs like "Morning Edition," "A Prairie Home Companion" and "Fresh Air," as well as locally-produced classical music and news programs such as "Iowa Talks."

Pledges can still be submitted on-line at or; checks can also be sent to the Friends of WSUI/KSUI, P.O. Box 4550, Iowa City, IA, 52244.
