UI hosts annual Iowa School Guidance conference

The annual Iowa School Counselor Association and Iowa Association for College Admission Counseling conference for K-12 school guidance counselors will be
Oct. 28-29 at the University of Iowa.

This year's conference is highlighted by motivational speaker Gale Mote from Cedar Rapids, who will discuss "Shed or Your Dead: Lessons from the Lizard." Also speaking will be Peter Yarrow of Peter, Paul, and Mary fame and now with the "Don't Laugh at Me Project," who will speak and entertain to explain his anti-bullying message. Christian Moore with the "Why Try? Project" will also speak to help students motivate themselves and make a positive change in their lives.

More than 31 educational breakout sessions will be offered at the conference. Graduate credit will be available through the UI Division of Continuing Education, as well NBCC credit through ISCA.

Additionally, on Monday, Oct. 28, statewide elected officials and candidates are invited to attend a roundtable discussion on "The State of School Counseling in Iowa" from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. in the Iowa Memorial Union. This forum will review new educational standards and the effects on our children, since Iowa is one of the only states in the country to no longer require guidance counselors in our schools.
