HHS SECRETARY THOMPSON TO TOUR UI HEALTH CARE RESEARCH
Health and Human Services Secretary Tommy Thompson will tour the General
Clinical Research Center (GCRC) at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics
beginning at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 17, to review NIH-funded projects.
Congressman Jim Leach (R-Iowa) will accompany Thompson. The GCRC houses research
projects such as the Iowa Cochlear Implant Project, smallpox vaccine trials,
studies of the links between genetic variations and birth defects and the
effects of grain dust upon respiratory health. Researchers will be on hand
to explain their work to the dignitaries.
At the conclusion of the tour, at approximately 2:05 p.m., Thompson and Leach
will meet with media representatives in Room 160 of the Medical Research Facility.
