Student entrepreneurs can enter in business plan competition

Iowa university and college students interested in starting their own businesses are invited to compete for three $5,000 grants as part of the Pappajohn New Venture Business Plan Competition.

This competition is sponsored by venture capitalist John Pappajohn and Equity Dynamics Inc. in coordination with the four John Pappajohn Entrepreneurial Centers (JPEC) across the state, including the University of Iowa JPEC in Iowa City. An Intent to Compete Form for the competition must be filed at JPEC by Oct. 14. Application materials can be obtained through the University of Iowa John Pappajohn Entrepreneurial Center in Suite S160 in the Pappajohn Business Building.

Grants will be awarded to the top three business plans submitted in the statewide student competition. Plans will be judged based on their content and viability. On Dec. 13, regional award winners will give oral presentations to Pappajohn and his Equity Dynamics staff in Des Moines, and the three $5,000 awards will be presented at a luncheon that day.

Eligibility requirements are:

* Full- or part-time undergraduate or graduate students registered for fall of 2002 at any Iowa post-secondary educational institution are eligible for the competition.

* Plans may be submitted by an individual or by a team of students.

* Teams must consist of at least one student member.

* Teams must consist of five or fewer members.

* Business plans must be for a start-up business only (not for an existing business).

In the 2001 competition, the UI team of James Fenton and Vikas Goel won a $5,000 grant for their biomedical solutions business plan.

Complete application materials, eligibility requirements, and guidelines are available at the UI JPEC in Room S160 of the Pappajohn Business Building on the UI campus.
