Local UI student wins physical therapy scholarship

Mary Elizabeth Ryan, daughter of Patrick and Kathleen Ryan of Council Bluffs, recently received a $500 scholarship from the University of Iowa Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Science Graduate Program.

Ryan, a second-year graduate student in physical therapy, received the Tracy Dahl Class of 1979 Memorial Scholarship. Criteria for the award include: a tremendous spirit for life, a great sense of humor, dedication to the profession of physical therapy, ability to communicate effectively, a desire to provide the highest quality patient care and an interest in advancing knowledge through research. The award is made possible by the physical therapy class of 1979 in memory of their classmate, Tracy Dahl.

At the UI, Ryan has served as an active student representative at the physical therapy program faculty meetings and on the program's Admissions and Curriculum Committee. She has an interest in nutrition as it relates to athletic performance.

Ryan received a bachelor's degree in athletic training from St. Ambrose University in Davenport, Iowa in 2001. She plans to graduate from the UI in December 2003.
