Independent scholar John A. Rice will present a lecture on "Mozart and the Theater" at 4:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 13, in Room 1027 of the Voxman Music Building on the University of Iowa campus.

Rice's lecture, which is sponsored by the UI Opera Studies Group and the musicology and theory areas of the UI School of Music, will be free and open to the public.

Rice is the author of books and articles on the music of the Classic period, including "Antonio Salieri and Viennese Opera," the Cambridge University Press guide to Mozart's opera "La Clemenza de Tito" and "Musical Performances at Court in Beethoven's Vienna." His study of "Empress Marie Therese and Music at the Viennese Court, 1792-1807" will be available next summer, and his book on "The Operas of Mozart" is scheduled for publication in 2004.

Rice also has published many articles in scholarly journals, and has lectured on Mozart and the Classic period around the world.
