Michael Moschen juggled in-house and ICN audiences in Hancher event

More than 800 Iowa students from 19 schools learned the theatrical magic of juggling from Michael Moschen — live in the University of Iowa Hancher Auditorium and over the Iowa Communications Network (ICN) — in a special matinee event on Friday, Nov. 22.

More than 500 students from three Iowa City elementary schools were the live audience, and they were joined by students in 16 ICN classrooms throughout the state on Iowa’s real-time interactive network.

Moschen also performed to a sold-out house in a public performance on Nov. 23 in Hancher..

Moschen is a juggler in the sense that Michael Jordan is a basketball player or Jimi Hendrix was a guitarist. His skills of movement and manipulation -- and his use of theatrics -- are so refined that the New York Times has sent a ballet critic to review his performances. A musical score by David van Tieghem adds to the ethereal, mesmerizing qualities of his performance.

In addition to his solo performances, Moschen has collaborated with artists as diverse as David Bowie (those are Moschen’s hands manipulating glass balls in the Bowie/Muppet film “Labyrinth”) and the Cirque du Soleil, and he has explored the technical/mechanical aspects of his work through an affiliation with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

A critic of the Denver Post concluded that Moschen performance is “one of the most magical things to be seen on stage."
