Candidates for top FSG position to visit campus next week

Five candidates for University of Iowa associate vice president and director of Facilities Services Group will be interviewed on campus the week of Dec. 2-6.

This position, held by Richard E. Gibson before his retirement in June 2000, is responsible for the planning, construction, operation and maintenance of general fund-supported academic and administrative support buildings, most campus grounds and all utility systems. It also provides strategic and operational leadership to the following departments: Design and Construction Services; Operations and Maintenance; Utilities; Space Planning and Utilization; Administrative Services Department, and the Campus Planning function of the Facilities Services Group.

Following is a schedule of visits by the five candidates, as well as biographical information on each of them.

Monday, Dec. 2: Theodore J. Weidner was chief facilities officer for the University of Massachusetts-Amherst from June 2000 until November 2002. He has held other facilities planning and management positions at Eastern Illinois University and Illinois State University. Weidner has a Ph.D. and M.S. in civil engineering, a master's degree in architecture and a B.S. in building science, architecture from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.

Tuesday, Dec. 3: Donald J. Guckert is director of planning, design and construction at the University of Missouri-Columbia. He has served the University of Missouri in several construction/management positions over the past 16 years. Guckert has a master's degree in engineering, a bachelor of science degree in engineering, and bachelor of arts degree in general arts and sciences, all from Pennsylvania State University.

Wednesday, Dec. 4: Steve Atkins is city manager for the City of Iowa City, Iowa, a position he has held since July 1986. Previous positions held by Atkins include village manager for the Village of Schaumburg, Ill., and city manager for the City of Eau Claire, Wis. Atkins has a master's degree in public administration and a bachelor of science degree, both from the University of Dayton.

Thursday, Dec. 5: Bobby J. Criminger is executive director of facilities management services at Cleveland State University in Ohio, a position he has held since 1994. Criminger has also held positions of associate vice president for facilities at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in Blacksburg, Va., and as associate vice president for administrative services at the University of Akron in Ohio. In addition, he was manager of maintenance and renovations at Duke University and physical plant director at the University of North Carolina, Asheville. Criminger has a bachelor of arts degree in interdisciplinary studies, mechanical engineering and business from the University of South Carolina.

Friday, Dec. 6: Andrew M. Ives is business manager at the University of Iowa and is currently serving as interim associate vice president and director of the Facilities Services Group. He has been at the UI since 1993. Ives has also served as senior associate counsel for finance at the UI and general counsel at the University of Arizona. He has his Juris Doctor degree from the University of California's Hastings College of Law and an A.B. degree in English from Dartmouth College.
