UI Libraries puts Old Capitol history exhibit online

An online exhibit of historical items featuring images of the Old Capitol has been created by the UI Libraries' department of special collections in time for the one- year anniversary of the fire that consumed the beloved building's gold dome.

The exhibit can be found at The images it contains are mostly the same as those that were on display in a physical exhibit in the main library last winter that was developed shortly after the fire. University Archivist David McCartney and Denise Anderson, archives assistant, gathered the items for the exhibit and later converted the images for use on the Internet with the help of Dan Stout, a Libraries staff member.

"It's just a small sampling of the items we have in our archives that feature an image of Old Capitol," McCartney said. "It's not intended to be comprehensive."

Among the items on virtual display are a photo from the university's memorial service for Abraham Lincoln in 1865 that shows Old Capitol in the middle of an otherwise empty field ("the landscape has changed significantly," said McCartney), numerous photos and drawings done throughout the building's history, and a collection of commencement brochures, Homecoming buttons, and other printed memorabilia featuring the Old Capitol's image.

McCartney said the exhibit will stay online indefinitely, although it will be updated as the building's restoration continues.
