Release: Nov. 18, 2002

WHAT: News briefing on Old Capitol Museum

WHEN: 10 a.m., Tuesday, Nov. 19

WHERE: North Room, Iowa Memorial Union, University of Iowa

The anniversary of the fire that destroyed the dome of the Old Capitol Museum is Nov. 20. Because of a number of requests from media outlets, we will hold a news briefing Tuesday, Nov. 19 to provide an update on progress in the efforts to restore and renovate the building.

Participants will include Shalla Wilson, assistant director of Old Capitol Museum, and Gary Nagle of the University’s Office of Design and Construction Services, who is project manager for the restoration project. They will make brief presentations and then be available for questions.

Because the re-construction of the dome and cupola of the Old Capitol is now under way, the building itself is a construction site. For that reason, there will be no tours of the interior of the building. If you wish to use interior photos or film footage of damage, we ask that you check your files.

Some examples of the original woodwork and new woodwork will be available for inspection at the news briefing. In addition, there is an exhibit of Old Capitol items at the Museum of Natural History in Macbride Hall, including the bell that was destroyed in the fire.
