UI education alumna named Iowa Principal of the Year

University of Iowa College of Education alumna Linda K. Whiting, principal of Feelhaver Elementary School in Fort Dodge, was recently given the 2002 Iowa Elementary Principal of the Year Award at a ceremony held in Washington, D.C.

Every year each of Iowa's 15 Area Education Agencies (AEAs) nominates one person for the award. A committee of Iowa educators chaired by the previous year's award recipient interviews three finalists before selecting the state winner. School Administrators of Iowa, the award's sponsor, presented Whiting with a plaque at a reception held at the Iowa Governor's Office in May.

Whiting was invited to Washington, D.C., Oct. 10-11 for the national awards ceremony, during which U.S. Secretary of Education Rod Paige recognized Whiting and the other states' winners. The award recipients were treated to a cocktail reception and black-tie dinner and also participated in breakout discussion sessions on various educational issues.

"It was an incredible experience," Whiting said. "We met wonderful people in Washington, D.C., and we were treated like royalty."

The UI awarded Whiting a bachelor's degree in education in 1966 and a master's degree in educational administration in 1984.
