Report lists UI among top American research universities

A new national survey ranks the University of Iowa among the top 25 public research institutions. "The Top American Research Universities" is the annual report from TheCenter, a research unit at the University of Florida. It includes data from all U.S. institutions that garnered $20 million or more in federal research dollars in 2000.

The UI was ranked among the top 25 public research institutions in the following categories:

  • total research and development

  • federally sponsored research and development

  • number of faculty who are members of the National Academies

  • number of doctorates awarded

  • number of postdoctoral appointments supported

  • endowment size

  • annual giving

This represents an improvement for the UI over last year when it earned four top-25 rankings. In two other categories—number of significant faculty awards and median SAT scores -- the UI ranked between 25 and 50.

TheCenter's report does not weight the figures according to faculty size or total enrollment. This gives larger institutions an advantage, making the UI's performance even more impressive, said Odie Porter from the Office of the Provost. The UI is the smallest public school in the Big Ten, with fewer than 30,000 students and slightly more than 1,700 faculty members. The other 15 public institutions with seven or more top-25 rankings in this year's report have as many as 49,000 students and up to 3,000 faculty members.

The report is co-edited by John V. Lombardi, chancellor, University of Massachusetts Amherst, and Elizabeth D. Capaldi, provost, University at Buffalo. TheCenter is a research enterprise focused on the competitive national context for major research universities. The report is available online at
