Statement to the News Media of Iowa from University of Iowa President Mary Sue Coleman

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- At a meeting this morning, the Regents of the University of Michigan elected me as their next president. I expect to move to Ann Arbor by the beginning of the fall semester.

I am deeply honored by being selected to lead the University of Michigan. At the same time, I am immensely sad to leave the University of Iowa. For the past six and a half years, I have loved every day of this job. Admittedly, some days have been stressful, but in the end, I was always confident that within our university community we could produce significant accomplishment by dialogue and collaboration.

These next few weeks will be very busy for us here at the University of Iowa as we make decisions about the '03 fiscal year. I will be fully involved with our academic and administrative leaders during these discussions in a very challenging budget climate. However, as is our custom, I fully expect that by working collaboratively we will maintain the core of excellence that has so long defined our great university and put us in the best possible position for the next fiscal and academic year.

Shortly we will also be celebrating the public kickoff of our comprehensive capital campaign. We are well along in the campaign and ahead of our initial fund-raising targets. Nothing will hinder the progress of the campaign that is sustained by the love of this institution of tens of thousands of faculty, staff, students, alumni and friends. I am confident that through the excellent work of deans and academic leaders, in concert with the UI Foundation, that the initial goal will not only be met, but exceeded.

Finally, I fervently hope that our elected officials from both political parties will quickly find ways once again to support financially this invaluable resource that is the University of Iowa. Great universities help states thrive. It is no different with the University of Iowa.
