Physician organization honors two doctors

The Iowa Chapter of the American College of Physicians-American Society of Internal Medicine (ACP-ASIM) has honored two physicians for excellence in their profession and service to community.

Joel Gordon, M.D., associate professor of internal medicine in the University of Iowa Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine, and Peter Reiter, M.D., physician director of the Ottumwa region for Iowa Health Physicians, each received the Laureate Award at a May 3 ceremony held at the UI at the annual scientific meeting of the Iowa Chapter of the ACP-ASIM.

A member of the UI faculty since 1985, Gordon was recognized for his outstanding teaching and research skills. He devotes his time to developing educational programs for medical students, fellows and residents. His commitment to medical education previously has been recognized by many organizations, including the Harvard-Macy Institute Fellowship for Physician Educators in 1995 and 1998. Gordon also has received many grants for research into kidney diseases.

Reiter is a graduate of both the UI and the UI Carver College of Medicine. He entered private practice with the Internal Medicine, PC clinic in Ottumwa in 1997 and later joined Iowa Health Physicians as medical director of the Ottumwa region. Reiter has served on many committees that contribute to continuing education for physicians or promote quality health care for patients. He also has been involved in numerous civic activities in the Ottumwa area.

Laureate awardees generally are senior physicians and ACP-ASIM Fellows or Masters of long-standing who have served their chapter with distinction. The ACP-ASIM is the nation's largest medical specialty society.
