UI receives $167,000 grant for international business education
U.S. Department of Education has awarded a $167,000 grant to the University
of Iowa's Henry B. Tippie College of Business to expand international business
education programs focused on Latin America.
The two-year grant to the Institute for International Business (IIB) at
Tippie College is from the department's Business and International Education
"This grant will allow us to integrate a global dimension into more
programs within the Tippie College. It will also generate greater knowledge
of the challenges and opportunities in Latin America among business and community
leaders throughout Iowa," said William Albrecht, IIB director and professor
The grant will fund the IIB's project, "University of Iowa in Latin
America: Training Global Leaders," which will provide internships in
Latin America for undergraduate and MBA students and help establish a concentration
in international business in the UI MBA program.
Eight UI faculty members will be involved in the project, which will integrate
foreign language instruction and increase the international content in UI
business courses. UI faculty will also develop and offer a Latin American
Business Projects course, and a web-based global immersion course available
to all students at the UI and others across the state. To further diversify
the MBA student body, the Tippie College will step up efforts to recruit students
who are fluent in Spanish and have had significant experience in Latin America
to lead Spanish language discussion sections.
"With a demand for more international business education courses, coupled
with Iowas increasing presence in the global market, this an opportune
time to develop this curriculum and program," Albrecht said.
Through the grant, the IIB will offer global training and exposure to Iowa
business leaders and develop materials on the region for the Iowa business
Business partners in this project include the Iowa Association of Business
and Industry (ABI) Foundation, HON Industries and Integrated DNA Technologies.
Through its Leadership Iowa program, the ABI will select 25 to 30 Iowa business
and civic leaders to participate in a study tour to Latin America under the
auspices of this project. Upon their return to Iowa they will give presentations
about the challenges and opportunities in Latin America to civic organizations
around the state. HON Industries and Integrated DNA Technologies will provide
projects for the students in the Latin American Business Projects course and
will accompany the students in this course while they undertake their internships
in Brazil and Mexico.
