Workshop explores career development for rural youth

The University of Iowa is offering a workshop via the Iowa Communication Network (ICN) May 31-June 1 to help educators, parents and others in rural communities learn how to promote the successful career development of students in their areas.

"Career Development of Rural Youth: Information and Strategies for Fostering Success," part of the UI's Center for Credit Programs' Summer Workshops for Education Professionals, will be conducted via the ICN at a number of sites around Iowa (see list below). The session runs from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. Friday, May 31 and 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Saturday, June 1.

The workshop will provide development theories, research and suggestions for supporting rural students, a group that faces challenges to success that are unique from students in urban areas. Instructor lectures, videos, activities, and structured discussions will help participants consider how rural communities can define and foster student success, compare the career development of rural with that of urban youth, and develop strategies for promoting successful career development.

This 1-semester-hour workshop is intended for education professionals, such as teachers, counselors, administrators, and support staff professionals. However, people with a general interest in a topic, particularly parents, are also invited to participate.

Grading for all workshops is Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory only.

An undergraduate degree is required. Potential participants without an undergraduate degree must provide evidence of previous course work in an appropriate discipline and evidence of work experience in the same field, and request Pass/Nonpass grading at time of registration.

Tuition cost is $244 per semester hour graduate credit. Participants should register by May 22.

ICN locations where registrants may attend are Bettendorf, Calmar, Cedar Falls, Cedar Rapids, Council Bluffs, Creston, Dubuque, Fort Dodge, Iowa City, Johnston, Marshalltown, Mason City, Ottumwa, Sheldon, Sioux City, Spencer and West Burlington.
