Auditions for UI summer production of Gilbert & Sullivan's 'Gondoliers' April 6-7

The University of Iowa Martha-Ellen Tye Opera Theater will hold auditions for its summer production, Gilbert and Sullivan's "The Gondoliers," April 6-7 in the Opera Rehearsal Room of the Voxman Music Building on the UI campus.

Auditions will be for both named roles and chorus. Director Sally Stunkel said that all voices are needed, with a particular need for singers with acting and dancing experience. Auditioners for lead roles should bring a prepared piece in English. An accompanist will be provided.

Performances of "The Gondoliers" will be July 12-14 in Clapp Recital Hall. Rehearsals will begin in late May, with evening rehearsals for chorus. Rehearsals with lead singers will arranged after the parts have been cast.

Interested singers may sign up for auditions on the Opera Theater bulletin board on the second floor of the Voxman Music Building. Times will be available from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, April 6, and from 4-6 p.m. Sunday April 7. Walk-in auditions will be held Saturday 2-3 p.m. and Sunday 6-7 p.m.

Stunkel said the chorus is made up of young people, but some of the lead characters are middle age and older.
