Nixon appointed to international road weather post

Wilfrid Nixon, professor in the University of Iowa College of Engineering department of civil and environmental engineering, recently completed a two-week technical scan tour of winter highways in Sapporo, Japan where he was appointed to a four-year term as one of two U.S. representatives on the executive committee of the Standing International Road Weather Conference (SIRWEC).

In addition, Nixon, who also is a research engineer at the UI's IIHR-Hydroscience & Engineering, presented a paper, "Managing Information for Optimal Winter Service Activities," at the XIth PIARC International Winter Road Congress.

Tour members attended the biannual meeting of SIRWEC, as well as the XIth PIARC (World Road Association) International Winter Road Congress. They also met with officials of the Hokkaido Development Bureau and held numerous meetings with Japanese and international winter maintenance experts. Over the next three months, team members will produce a report of their findings, which Nixon plans to share at meetings across the United States.

Nixon currently serves as chair of the winter maintenance committee of the Transportation Research Board, a branch of the National Research Council (NRC). He also serves as vice president of the Iowa Section of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE). ASCE, currently celebrating its 150th anniversary, represents more than 123,000 members of the civil engineering profession worldwide and is America's oldest national engineering society.
