OddBar Trio from UI will present jazz concert in Mason City March 9
The University of Iowa Arts Share program will present an unusual jazz performance
by the OddBar Trio at 2:45 p.m., Saturday, March 9 at the Charles H. MacNider
Art Museum in Mason City. The performance will be preceded by a related children's
art exhibit at 2 p.m. Both events are free and open to the public.
After choosing works of art with elementary school children, the trio of
musicians will translate these artworks into music. The musicians and children
will then discuss this process in which art transforms itself into music.
The interactive style of this performance is geared to make children participants
in the creative process, instead of a passive audience.
Members of the OddBar Jazz Trio are trumpeter Brent Sandy, guitarist Steve
Grismore and drummer Jim Dreier. Begun in 1996 at the UI School of Music,
the trio presents an eclectic range of musical styles through original works
and more traditional jazz compositions. Once the director of jazz studies
at the UI, Grismore has also taught at Iowa Wesleyan and other colleges. He
has performed at clubs and jazz festivals around the country.
Sandy, who joined the UI School of Music faculty in 2000, is a jazz trumpet
and flugelhorn performer, teacher and clinician. Sandy performs regularly
with local jazz groups and toured Europe in 1998.
Percussionist Jim Dreier is an instructor in the UI jazz studies program,
where he coaches small jazz ensembles. He has also studied percussion and
drumming in Brazil and Cuba.
The UI Arts Share program provides artistic resources from the Iowa Center
for the Arts to schools and community organizations. The 2001 Arts Share roster
includes more than 70 faculty and graduate students in music, theater, dance,
