Law study, careers encouraged at Women in Law Conference March 9

The organization for Women Law Students and Staff (OWLSS) will hold its 26th annual Women in Law Conference from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, March 9 at the University of Iowa College of Law. The conference is designed to assist and educate prospective and current female law students about law school and the law profession. The conference is free for UI students and is $10 for non-UI students. The cost includes breakfast with law faculty and a luncheon. Register at

Adrien Wing, the Bessie Dutton Murray Distinguished Professor of Law at the UI College of Law, is the invited keynote speaker. Her address, "Global Critical Race Feminism: Legal reform for the 21st Century," focuses on the plight of women of color in the United States and around the world, specifically in Afghanistan. Her presentation will also consider how women attorneys, using their legal skills, can assist these and other women.

Prospective students will have opportunities to speak with UI faculty and current law students, receive information from financial aid and admissions representatives, talk with members of the law community, and tour the law building. Students will also be introduced to the Socratic, or participatory style of teaching focused on problem solving during a mock class led by Hillary Sale, UI law professor. Sale graduated from Harvard Law School and teaches contracts, corporations, and securities. Corporate misconduct and white-collar crime are among her other specialized areas of interests.

Current law students attending the conference will have the opportunity to hear from a panel of recent law school graduates, participate in a practitioner's session where women from diverse areas of the legal profession will speak about their experiences, and attend a quality-of-life session.

For more information or to register for the conference contact OWLSS at (319) 335-8772. The conference is an annual event by OWLSS, and is supported by the law school and by the UI Student Government.

Individuals with disabilities are encouraged to attend all University of Iowa-sponsored events. If you are a person with a disability who requires an accommodation in order to participate in this program, please contact OWLSS in advance.
