UI students earn scholarships to cover internship expenses

Often, University of Iowa students land great internships, but lack the finances for travel, housing and other expenses associated with the position. Now, two students who have entertainment industry internships have earned two $1,500 scholarships that can be used to cover these expenses.

The UI Career Center has announced Nancy Mayfield and Luke Olson are the two recipients for the new Keith Benson/ Sam Goody Entertainment Internship Scholarship.

The scholarship, the first award of its kind to be offered by the Career Center, is funded by a donation from the Sam Goody organization in the name of Keith Benson, a UI alumnus and retired chief financial officer at Sam Goody.

Nancy Mayfield is a second-year student in the Theatre Arts Master of Fine Arts program studying dramaturgy. She will be interning at the La Jolla Playhouse in San Diego, Calif., where she will write evaluations on incoming scripts, participate in season planning, organizing events, production dramaturgy, grant research, and audience development. Mayfield’s career goal is to become a professional production dramaturge and an artistic director. She is from Iowa City.

Luke Olson is a third-year student pursuing his Bachelor of Arts degree in theatre arts. He will be interning with the Williamstown Theatre Festival in Williamstown, Mass. During his internship he will be designing lighting for shows in the studio and outdoor spaces, and assisting the lighting designer and master engineer on the main stage production. His career goal is to become a professional lighting designer in theater, dance, and opera. Olson is from Indianola, Iowa.
