Women's Center sponsors workshop on legal and financial issues for same-sex couples

The Women's Resource and Action Center at the University of Iowa, together with the Iowa Women's Foundation and the Iowa City Public Library, will present "Domestic Partnerships," a workshop on legal and financial issues pertaining to lesbian and gay couples. This final workshop in the "Women and Money" series is scheduled for Thursday, June 20, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. in Meeting Room A of the Iowa City Public Library.

Patricia A. Cain, professor of law at the University of Iowa, will be the presenter. "Lesbian and gay couples can sometimes take advantage of legal protections offered by domestic partnership rules that have been passed by local governments or by employers," says Cain. "However, most couples will need to create their own legal protections by using private contracts or property arrangements." The workshop will focus on public domestic partnership rules, as well as on private legal options. Workshop participants are encouraged to bring questions about tax or property laws.

Although the workshops in this series were developed for women, everyone is welcome to attend. Refreshments will be provided by the New Pioneer Co-op. Seating and materials for workshops may be limited, so pre-registration is strongly encouraged.

To register for the workshop or for more information, contact the Iowa Women's Foundation at (319) 337-4222 or e-mail
