Law professor Carlson is recommended as presidential search committee
Owen J. Newlin, Board of Regents, State of Iowa, announced today his recommendation
for the chair of the University Presidential Search and Screen Advisory Committee
at the University of Iowa. The appointment will be a part of a formal process
for the selection of a new president to be presented to the Regents for approval
at their meeting on June 20 in Ames.
"This is a joint decision reached as a result of direct consultation
with and the full concurrence of Jeffrey Cox, the president of the University
of Iowa Faculty Senate. We are recommending Jonathan C. Carlson, University
of Iowa professor of law, as Search and Screen Advisory Committee chair,"
Carlson has been on the faculty at Iowa's College of Law since 1983. His
teaching assignments include various aspects of international law, as well
as commercial and criminal law. His scholarly work focuses on topics in international
environmental law and international trade law. Carlson is a graduate of the
University of Chicago School of Law. Prior to joining the University of Iowa
faculty, he was clerk to a U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals Judge, an associate
with a prominent Washington, D.C. private legal firm, and an adjunct professor
at the Catholic University of America.
Selection of the remaining members of the search and screen advisory committee
on the campus, as well as selection of a search firm to manage the entire
process through final selection of the next University of Iowa president by
the Board of Regents will be the next steps in the process according to Greg
Nichols, Regents executive director. The goal is to work on those two steps
in the next few weeks in order for recommendations to be presented to the
Board at its July meeting in Cedar Falls.
University of Iowa President Mary Sue Coleman will be stepping down Aug.
1. It was announced last week that Willard L. Sandy Boyd, a professor
of law and former university president, will be asked to serve as interim
president from that date forward until the selection process is complete and
a new president is on campus.
For more information, call Greg Nichols, executive director, at 515-281-6531.
More details on the proposed search process will be available in the Board
of Regents docket materials, to be available on the web at 11 AM Wednesday,
